Nicknamed the Steel City, Sheffield is known around the world for its steel production including the discovery of stainless steel.
Sheffield's population increased massively in the Industrial Revolution; this was largely due to the availability of jobs in the booming coal mining and steel industries.
Today Sheffield is one of the top places in the country to do business and is in the process of regenerating its economy by focusing on alternative sectors like the technology and sports industries. However, manufacturing, construction and public service sectors are the biggest employers in the City.
Despite the industrial aspects of Sheffield, the city has received international praise for its commitment to green energy. There are over 80 parks in the city and it has been crowned the greenest city in Europe.
