Originally dominated by engineering and manufacturing, today Wolverhampton's largest employers are based in the service sector, with the City Council employing over 12,000 workers. Jaguar Land Rover recently invested £500m in the area by doubling the size of its engine plant, creating an additional 1,400 jobs for the local workforce. The city has a strong engineering past and was also the birthplace of the Sunbeam motor car, the first vehicle to reach 200mph, in 1927.
