The city of Leicester can trace its roots back to roman times when the area was known as Ratae Corieltauvorum. Originally just a roman fort, an increase in trading and activity brought an influx of settlers and today Leicester has a population of over half a million people.
Trade in the city ranges from clock manufacture, to crisp factories, to jewellers. The city is home to Walkers Crisps who are often advertised by famous Leicester citizen, Gary Lineker, a celebrated pundit and former England International. Leicester has a great sporting record with notable achievements in both Rugby and Football.
There are currently two universities in Leicester, the University of Leicester and De Montfort University. The city has the largest celebrations of the Hindu festival Diwali, outside of India.
