Historically a hub for the footwear and leather manufacture industry, Northampton town grew rapidly in the 19th century as the industrial revolution made the production of goods much easier. During the First World War, Northampton played an important part in supplying boots for soldiers.

Today, Northampton is a popular living area for London commuters and many of the old boot factories are now commercial offices or have been converted into accommodation. Northampton's major industries today are based around either finance or distribution with companies such as Schweppes, Carlsberg and Panasonic working in the town.

In the sporting world the Northampton saints are the town's most famous export and the club won the Hieneken Cup in 2000. Their football team Northampton Town are nicknamed "The Cobblers" after the town's history of shoe production.
