What is now one of the most celebrated cities in the world originally had a population of 500 people. By the beginnings of the 19th century it had become one of the busiest ports in the world with almost half of the world's trade passing through the famous Liverpool docks. Unfortunately some of this trade was related to slavery with an estimated 40,000 African slaves transported by Liverpool ships.

Today, Liverpool has a different kind of port in Liverpool John Lennon Airport which is named after what is probably their most famous export, The Beatles, one of the most iconic bands in history, who have sold over 140 million records since their inception.

Today, the city attracts tourists from all over the world to see the transformed docks, listed buildings and landmarks, Liverpool was crowned European Capital of Culture in 2008.
